Designed to filter out offensive material before it can be viewed on your screen.  Excellent for parents who want to ensure that children are kept away from the things “you would prefer them not to see”.  Web-filtering software is also useful for offices and public use computers.  This software is free, and updated regularly. Ad-Aware, anti advert/adware software

This is an excellent software tool to keep your computer free of advertisements that download themselves on to your computer while you are surfing the Internet. Importantly, this software can remove most of these annoying adverts too

SpyBot, anti spy-ware software

If you are infected with spy ware your computer will be compromised, have pop ups springing up out of the blue, and generally run poorly.  Worse still your personal information might be being sent to other net users, for them to use as they please.  SpyBot does a good job of removing and avoiding these problems

AGV, anti-virus software

AGV has a personal edition of its software, that is free to download, and is one of the best anti-virus programs you can use. Please note, if you already have anti-virus software installed, there is no need to install this software, just keep your current software updated. Antivirus software is not designed to run alongside other anti-virus software

Zone Alarm, firewall software

This is a software firewall, which effectively controls which software on your machine has access to the Internet or network, and prevents unauthorised access from other machines on the Internet or network.  Windows XP has a firewall, but this one is suitable for people who want more control over their computer, or do not have Windows XP. There is a free version for home users on the website, but you might have to hunt for it a little
